Tender, loving care of your liver

Report from The New Straits Times (Malaysia) dated 8 January 2012 :-

Tender, loving care of your liver

Eat right: Have a diet rich in vegetables, fruits and proteins. Cut down on fats and carbohydrates as these can lead to fatty deposits in the liver. Eat small meals so the food can be easily digested and won’t overburden the liver.

Cutting down on alcohol intake can help relieve the liver of some of its burdens

Minimise or avoid alcohol intake: This means cutting down on beer, wines, cocktails, champagne and liquor in other forms.

Take medicines according to prescription: Even seemingly harmless medicines can damage the liver. If you have diabetes and high blood cholesterol and triglycerides, strictly follow your doctor’s instructions.

Avoid environmental pollutants: Fumes of chemicals such as car fumes, insect sprays, paints and other aerosol sprays, when inhaled, may be absorbed by the liver and damage it.

Exercise: There’s good evidence that gradual weight loss coupled with regular exercise can reduce fatty deposits in the liver.

Nutritional supplements: Supplements which contain polyunsaturated fatty acids, also known as essential phospholipids, have vital nutrients that can support the liver. When a liver is damaged, the membranes of its cells lose phospholipids, an important component of all cell membranes. But when phospholipids are replaced quickly, a damaged liver can repair enough liver cells to resume its normal functions. The liver is the only internal organ that can regenerate, as long as there are enough healthy liver cells.
