Woman dies after taking weight-loss pills bought off the Net
SINGAPORE - A 24-year-old female has reportedly died from complications after taking slimming pills that were bought on the Internet, Chinese evening daily Shin Min reported.
Yu Jing Ni, who previously studied in Singapore Polytechnic, was about 1.7m tall but weighed less than 50kg, a relative revealed to the paper.
The relative, singer Lei Qi, said the deceased had a habit of dieting and trying out different slimming methods since she was in secondary school.
The 24-year-old had complained that she was feeling unwell at about 2am, Jan 11. The mother immediately brought her to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
The deceased's brother, Yu Yun Ting, 19, told Shin Min that doctors immediately started trying to save his sister but their efforts failed. She was pronounced dead on 6am, Jan 12.
The brother said that his sister had suffered from depression after a break-up with her boyfriend. The brother believed that as a result of the break-up, his sister also dropped out of Singapore Polytechnic about two years ago.
He said he did not know when and why his sister would buy off-the-shelf slimming medication as she was already very thin when she had depression.
A general practitioner that the paper spoke to said that consuming slimming medication bought from the Internet could result in severe complications.
Typically these medications are not regulated nor are their compounds known, the doctor said.
Hence, sellers may resort to making such medicines stronger than usual. This will usually increase the chances of suffering its side effects, which include giddiness, increased heart rate and increased blood pressure.
To avoid such complications, the doctor suggested that those who want to diet and lose weight should use natural methods instead.
