Soothe your tummy
You may be suffering from Gerd (gastro-oesophageal reflux disease), a condition when the reflux of gastric content causes troublesome symptoms or complications.
It is due to frequent acid reflux — the back up of stomach acid or bile into the oesophagus — and symptoms include heartburn, chest and stomach pain, regurgitation of food or feeling nauseous and having difficulty swallowing.
Try the following foods to soothe your tummy.
OATMEAL It’s a low-fat and high-fibre food that can relieve your stomach. Kickstart your day with a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast and top it off with sliced bananas, which are also a good source for relief.
GINGER It’s known for its anti-inflammatory properties and acts as a natural remedy for stomach upset. Infuse about 2g to 4g of ginger into hot water to make tea, or use ginger when cooking.
BEANS An excellent source of protein and a great substitute for meat. Beans contain fibre that helps to ease Gerd symptoms. Make it a part of your daily diet.
What to avoid Restrict your intake of the following food and drinks to prevent the recurrence of acid reflux:
CITRUS FRUIT Fruit like lemon, orange, pineapple and grapefruit, as well as tomato, garlic and onion can irritate the oesophagus lining.
PROCESSED FOOD High fat and processed foods like french fries, hamburgers, potato chips and chicken nuggets can relax the lower oesophageal sphincter.
CAFFEINE Reduce intake of coffee, tea and hot chocolate, alcoholic beverages and mint (such as peppermint and spearmint) which can weaken the lower oesophageal sphincter.
CARBONATED DRINKS Reduce intake of carbonated beverages, including soda which can cause stomach acid to flow up into the oesophagus.
CHOCOLATE This often contains caffeine which can spark Gerd symptoms.
